Basic breathing apparatus operator training
During the basic breathing apparatus operator training, the student learns the basics of working safely with a breathing apparatus. It is important to keep in mind that, during this training, we do not attempt to train the student to become an accomplished firefighter but instead focus on how to control an emergency situation and prevent it from getting out of hand.
The basic breathing apparatus operator training is intended for those crew members who will be responsible for getting an emergency under control until the emergency services arrive.
1 day (3 half-days) including the completion of an e-learning module prior to the on-board training
Breathing apparatus operators may be selected from both crew as well as hotel staff, if they are deemed fit enough to perform the role. Before a captain can appoint a person as a breathing apparatus operator, he or she must confirm that the individual holds both a certificate indicating succesfully completion of the breathing apparatus operator course and a certificate of medical fitness.
A certificate of medical fitness for employability as a breathing apparatus operator is required to be able to participate in the training.
The basic breathing apparatus operator training includes both theoretical and practical components.
Topics covered during the training sessions include:
- The use of the breathing apparatus
- Working together in a team in emergency situations
- Exploring affected areas and rescue
- Fighting a small fire
- Evacuation exercises
The theoretical knowledge learned during the training is put into practice on board through simulated drills.
We provide all required training materials for use throughout Europe, including a specially equipped training unit in which various scenarios can be practiced.
Successfully completing this training entitles the trainee to a breathing apparatus operator certificate valid for 1 year.
As prescribed by the RSP, these certificates are issued in the safety book distributed by Op Koers! Maritiem.
Validity of the certificate of medical fitness
A certificate of medical fitness is issued based on age and any medical limitations observed.
For those who have earned the certificate, the following age-based validity periods apply:
Up to 40 years old: valid 3 years
40 – 50: valid 2 years
50+: valid 1 year
Refresher breathing apparatus operator training
A breathing apparatus operator can stay certified by completing an annual refresher training course.
During this refresher breathing apparatus operator training, the focus on refreshing the participant’s previously acquired knowledge by re-teaching both necessary theoretical knowledge and practical actions through a scenario-based training program.
After the student successfully completes the refresher course, the previous earned certificate is renewed for the legally established period.
